UDOT is using HD's per vehicle speed data to calculate travel times, which are displayed on variable message signs along with I-15 trip times so commuters can choose the route that best serves their purposes.

LINDON, UT—Several SmartSensor HD units have been installed to monitor traffic conditions on Utah's newest highway, and the data from these sensors has already shown that the road's positive impact on the community is exceeding expectations. Legacy Parkway is a 14-mile long route between Salt Lake and Davis Counties that was designed specifically to reduce congestion on Interstate 15.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation, 27 SmartSensor HD units have been deployed to collect vehicle speeds, volumes and occupancy. UDOT is using HD's per vehicle speed data to calculate travel times, which are displayed on variable message signs along with I-15 trip times so commuters can choose the route that best serves their purposes.
UDOT opened Legacy Parkway to commuters on Saturday, September 13, 2008, and officials say the road's first rush-hour test on the following Monday went even better than planned. Eric Rasband, a TOPS transportation planner at UDOT's Traffic Operations Center, says the parkway carried more than 32,000 vehicles that day. "During the afternoon peak rush hour, we had 44 percent of I-15 traffic use Legacy Parkway instead," Rasband says.
As a result of this shift, the data from SmartSensor HD shows that Legacy Parkway is having a significant impact on travel times. The week before, a commuter traveling from downtown Salt Lake to the city of Farmington during the afternoon peak spent an average of 42 minutes on I-15; thanks to Legacy, the same trip during the same time of day now takes an average of 16 minutes.
On Tuesday, September 16, UDOT shared SmartSensor HD's data with a legislative task force that was very impressed with the data and the timing of the information. Says Rasband, "In our opinion, this project is a huge success."
